Here is a list of the favorite raw food snacks I eat on a daily basis.
Be gone with soda and chips! Be gone with all that which is unhealthy! Embrace food in it’s simple, natural form, unprocessed, not manufactured, all-natural and raw as Nature intended. Your body will thank you later.
At a fresh market there is a large assortment of raw food snacks available to choose from. Many are common and are included in daily meals of many people around the world like apples, bananas, peppers and green leafy plants for salad. Some of these foods are surprisingly filling while others are difficult to carry and keep fresh. Despite the downside of spoiling and bruising fresh food, there are alternatives you may not be aware of. Below I list my favorite raw snack foods.
- Spinach, baby or full grown - This incredibly healthy plant is very filling and sadly, a quick rot. Keep it cold to prolong it’s use.
- Cauliflower - I just love the taste and texture of these young flower buds. So crunchy!
- Mango (simply amazing, perhaps singly my favorite fruit of all. High in carbs and fiber, one mango satisfies my hunger for hours. However, mangos are extremely messy, has a large pit and not always completely ripe).
- Almonds - Equal awesomeness! Eleven of these drupes (not a nut!) have about 110 calories. How cool is that? They even have five grams of protein. Do not eat the salted and cooked in oil variety. Raw only please. Your body and energy level will thank you later.
- Lara Bars - Here is where raw food meets portability. These are organic, raw, unsweetened bars to live on. Cashew Crunch is just cashews ground up with dates and tastes great. Another example is the banana bar which has almonds, unsweetened bananas and dates.
- Bananas! - Cheap food, high calories. Eat it.
- Think 5 Bar - Not sure if these are 100% raw but these are amazing health bars. No joke. Each bar contains one cup of spinach, one cup of watercress and one cup of broccoli, spirulina, parsley, carrots, and beets. Oh and that’s not all! In addition to those 3 cups of vegetable power, each bar also contains 2 cups of fruit with a touch of flax seeds. Having so much vegetable and fruit power jammed into a bar may be hard to fathom but it’s true. Few stores carry these so order some online at thinkproducts.com. If you order get the red berry flavor, not the chocolate.
- Celery - Nice and crunchy with a cool flavor. High in sodium but a touch of sea salt makes celery taste even better.
- Green Vegetable or Fruit Powers - excellent way to add greens and phytonutrients to your diet. Simple add a teaspoon into some fruit juice or water, perhaps add stevia and shake it up for a healthy nutritional drink.
There are several other raw food items that I enjoy but do not consume with much regularity. seaweed (I put sea salt on my hard boiled eggs instead), cucumbers (I dont see a good reason to eat these. Cucs taste good. They are low in calories, fiber and nutrients however.), carrots (In raw form tough for me to digest but carrots are very nutritious. Carrot juice with orange juice tastes good though.), apples (airy without much substance. Tastes like crunchy sugar water to me), and broccoli (I do not like the taste of these young flower buds and rarely eat it, but broccoli serves as an excellent, raw food snack due to it’s combination of carbohydrates, fiber and high protein. In fact, broccoli contains more calories from protein (45%) than nuts (~15%), beans (~30%) and other fruits and plants (~1-15%.). This is due to the flower buds. Therefore, broccoli is a filling snack.
